Characterization of atmospheric coherent structures and their impact on a utility-scale wind turbine

چکیده
Atmospheric turbulent velocity fluctuations are known to increase wind turbine structural loading and accelerate wake recovery, but the impact of vortical coherent structures in atmosphere on turbines has not yet been evaluated. The current study uses flow imaging with natural snowfall a field view spanning inflow near wake. Vortical diameters order 1 m identified characterized approaching 2.5 MW region bottom blade tip elevation hub height. Their loading, power generation behaviour Long structure packets $(\mathrm{\ \mathbin{\lower.3ex\hbox{$\buildrel> \over {\smash{\scriptstyle\sim}\vphantom{_x}}$}}\ }200\;\textrm{m)}$ shown fluctuating stresses support tower. Large vortices interact blades, leading deviations from expected generation. sign these is related rotation direction vortices, same as circulation blades periods surplus, opposite causing deficit. Periods deficit coincide contraction events. These findings highlight importance considering properties when making design siting decisions.

Measuring Wind Turbine Coherent Infrasound
To extract the optimum coherent infrasound signal from a wind turbine whose rotation is not precisely periodic, we use an optical telescope fitted with a photodetector to obtain reference blade passage periods, recording these together with the microphone infrasound signal. Signal processing of the quasi-periodic microphone signal is then used to obtain periodic data, which are analyzed by an a...
متن کاملDependence of offshore wind turbine fatigue loads on atmospheric stratification
The stratification of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is classified in terms of the M-O length and subsequently used to determine the relationship between ABL stability and the fatigue loads of a wind turbine located inside an offshore wind farm. Recorded equivalent fatigue loads, representing blade-bending and tower bottom bending, are combined with the operational statistics from the ins...
متن کاملAtmospheric stability affects wind turbine power collection
The power generated by a wind turbine largely depends on the wind speed. During time periods with identical hub-height wind speeds but different shapes to the wind profile, a turbine will produce different amounts of power. This variability may be induced by atmospheric stability, which affects profiles of mean wind speed, direction and turbulence across the rotor disk. Our letter examines turb...
متن کاملAtmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Applications in Wind Turbine Siting
Atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnels (ABLWTs) have been used for 40 years to simulate the interaction of the wind and earth in the lowest few hundred meters of the atmosphere. ABLWTs are well-suited for investigating flow in complex terrain and have different strengths and weaknesses than numerical modeling. There are a wide variety of applications, including performing wind resource assessm...
